From Turkey... with Love ... Fatmagul

Last week of June ... and somewhere ... this name FATMAGUL flirtingly feathered my ears... it was probably a Television commercial or a radio ad ... I don't recollect ... but something resonated ...

30th June ... We came back from work and I announced to my family ... FATMAGUL is starting tonight ... for my family it wasn't a surprise coz I am totally filmy and a television buff...

Episode after episode ... Fatmagul has become a part of our Family ... Kerim ... Mustafa ... Muqadas... Rehmi are all a part of our lives now. Meryem - Ebe Nine and her herbal concoctions  ... everytime she would say ' Abhi chai banake laati hu... tumhe acha lagega..." we too are ready with our glass of herbal tea ... without milk ... Turkish style.

Having watched so much of television, one thing that confuses me is... HOW on earth can a television serial of this magnitude be so grounded, so natural, so true to its story ... and so very relatable.

Technically it is ten notches higher than perfect ... the camera work is an integral part of the story ... and by now we already know that for a particular scene how the camera would move... like everytime someone moves out of the room ... mostly it's a mirror image... everytime an establishing room shot is taken ... it is a top corner angle.

The production is high class .... and if they are showing you a bungalow ... it's a bungalow and not a card board set ... If it's a car scene ... it is a car scene ... and not some novice chroma screen goofa ...

The best part about the characters is that even the supposedly bad guys have their weak humanly moments and the good guys too have their grey shades ... every one including Reşat Yaşaran, Selim, Munir, Vural, Erdoğan and Mustafa are so real characters... so when they are reigning their cruelty ... you hate them... and when in their weak moments ... they repent ... you don't go ... "They deserve it." ... you feel their guilt.

Muqadas is one lovable sweet heart ... you actually don't know ... should you hate her or.... should you like her ... coz that's what her character is.
Rehmi is an angel ...

Meryem ... the matured, wise, motherly figure ... who not only helps FATMAGUL to overcome her and handle her past but also is carrying the burden of a past that she has just revealed to Kerim ... so when he sulks and is angry with her ...  she lets him be for a while .... and at the same time her mellow motherly feelings reach out to FATMAGUL and confess ... " Main use aise nahin dekh sakti ..." She is so real ... you need to see her impromptu interactions with Muqadas Madam ... and you shall know what acting is ...

But the heart of FATMAGUL is FATMAGUL and KAREM'S Love Story .... and the heart beat is ... FATMAGUL ...

The subtle transition of a small village girl of Turkey to a girl who has faced it all and come a long way to recognize her real love ... she is fem extraordinaire ... you cannot but LOVE her for she is a woman not just of substance but with dignity and infinite love ... which she would pour out to Karem eventually ... we know ... but it"s not going to be easy for them ... coz she has and he has ... shadows of their past to fight and they both are together at it ...
Karem with his Turkish countryside charm ... is not the typical hero ... flawless ... but he is in all respect ... a man who stood by FATMAGUL''s side and proclaimed loud and clear ... " Main tumhara saath kabhi nahin chodunga" and he doesn't and neither does she ... their Romance is lingering ... divine ... true .... and has passed through immense pain which they both have overcome and finally ... the three words ... I LOVE YOU... FATMAGUL confesses ... while he pretends to be sleeping after a tough night of cold and bad health ... The sunlight peeps through and kisses his face while she blushes and coyly runs away into her room ... only to dress up in a vibrant red colored top ... in which she looks astonishingly beautiful ...

He calls her up and tells her to say it again ... and she sheepishly ... says it and cuts the phone ... I LOVE YOU ...

FATMAGUL, technically, emotionally, artistically is a marvel and I so much wish and yearn to watch it every day like my daily dose ... the best part is I can comfortably watch it with my wife and two sons, who equally love it and eagerly wait for it... So on Sundays, we all are actually a little gloomy coz that's when sunshine called FATMAGUL wouldn't be beaming through our television sets.

Almost an hour of episode and not a minute of drag ... that's the power of a well written ... content driven ...work of art ... FATMAGUL.

Thank you ZINDAGI for bringing FATMAGUL into our lives all the way from TURKEY ... with LOVE.
